Kaleb Hartley was named South Dakota’s 2015 Youth of the Year, which is the highest honor presented by Boys and Girls Clubs. Kaleb, representing the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Missouri River Area in Wagner, SD, was one of seven finalists who were selected based on their academic record, community involvement and involvement in their local club. The finalists spent two days in Pierre being interviewed by judges and meeting dignitaries like the Governor, First Lady and legislators. Kaleb has been a club member since 2003 and has volunteered thousands of hours at the Boys & Girls Club. He is a 4.0 student and is the only senior Native American member on the National Honor Society. He is very passionate about Academic Excellence, Cultural Unity and Sobriety in all senses. Kaleb is the son of Bill Hartley and Arlys Johnson. After high school he plans to attend Creighton University in Omaha, NE and major in Nursing and minor in Native American Studies. Kaleb will now compete at the Midwest Regional competition in July. The Regional Youth of the Year that is selected will then compete in Washington D.C. in September for the National Youth of the Year.
